THREE HUNDRED
AND ONE
This was the
301st participant. He did his cast in 1999 for the "No If's,
And's or
" exhibit. He was 43 years old and a computer
engineer, I have found that size discrimination is alive and well
regarding height as well as girth. His response gives a good example.
Participant's
Statement
"I'm
6'7" tall, weigh 210 pounds, married and living in Kansas
City with my wife and two dogs. Bicycling is my favorite activity
and I have been doing it for nearly 23 years. Sailing is another
passion. I moved her from Ft> Lauderdale about four years ago,
where I was living on my sailboat, which I have since sold. The
computer industry is where I am presently making a living.
It's interesting to see the backside of one's body because this
is a view of ourselves which is difficult to fully see without
the aid of several big mirrors.
In talking with Larry about how various people are discriminated
against because of the shape or look of our bodies, it reminded
me of an incident that happened to me. I was doing a phone interview
for an engineers position on a sailboat about 10 years ago. It
was a position that I was more than qualified for. After telling
the boat owner that I'm 6'7" tall, he said that I was too
tall for the job because the engineer's bunk is only 6'5"
long! I literally begged him to let me come see for myself if
I would fit in the bunk and he refused. I was sure that the job
was mine until he asked my height."
