SIXTY-EIGHT

This was the 68th participant. The cast was taken in 1994. She was 69 years old and is a tax consultant. She posed for two similar casts and at the time was the oldest person I had worked with. Her having had a mastectomy helped make this an extremely important addition to the project. She wanted to participate so that others who may be faced with this operation could gain strength through knowing what this looked like. At the time of her surgery she said the only visual available for her to look at were flat line drawings. Her fear was that she would be left with a big gaping hole in her chest. After the surgery, she would not leave her home for a month because she was embarrassed. Her hope is that she can help others deal with their fears and to understand what is and what isn't important to deal with. It is my wish that people will be able to see that this is just another form that our bodies can take and that it matters not as to the persons worth. This piece is still active in exhibits.
